MSO Plays Petrushka

Kats-Chernin Big Rhap WORLD PREMIERE
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1
Stravinsky Petrushka

Bramwell Tovey conductor
Alexander Gavrylyuk pianist

Revised in 1947, Stravinsky’s extraordinary ballet burlesque, Petrushka captures the love triangle of one of Russia’s great folk characters Petrushka, and two other puppets, a Ballerina and a Moor.

Set in St. Petersburg’s historic Shrovetide Fair, this universally familiar story became one of the greatest productions of the Ballets Russes and is still much loved by audiences and musicians alike across the world today.

A new work from MSO’s 2017 Composer in Residence, Elena Kats-Chernin opens the concert before Tchaikovsky’s sublimely romantic Piano Concerto No.1 takes you to a blissful, happy place, with its three movements full of Hungarian folk song joie de vivre and energetically vivid optimism.

Pre-concert talk: MSO Librarian, Alastair McKean, will deliver a 30-minute discussion about Petrushka beginning at 6.30pm.

Running time: 1 hour and 45 minutes, including a 20-minute interval

Please note Ukranian-born, award-winning pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk has replaced Jorge Luis Prats as guest soloist on Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1.
