Droplets, rivers, streams, oceans; water has long been a source of inspiration for all kinds of artists, particularly composers.
French conductor, Ludovic Morlot, leads the MSO through a series of water-themed works, beginning with Liadov’s shimmering Enchanted Lake. Sibelius evokes the dance of sea nymphs in The Oceanides; playful and innocent one moment, frothing and foaming into giant waves of sound the next. Britten’s ‘Four Sea Interludes’ from Peter Grimes are a darker, more psychological view of the sea, from the chilling first notes of Dawn, to the dramatic clash of Storm. Marc-André Dalbavie’s La source d’un regard makes for a contemporary change, balancing shocking moments of brass and percussion with cool, misty atmospheres. All this builds towards the three symphonic sketches of Debussy’s divine aquatic masterpiece: La Mer.
