Dance festival returns with a mighty splash!
Thursday, June 19, 2008
The annual splash!dance Festival is a four-day celebration of all things dance-related, offering a broad range of traditional, modern and popular dance classes, performances and workshops.
Running from July 3-6, splash!dance includes a fantastic range of fun-filled events for the whole family.
The GPAC foyer will come to life as the Magical Dance Kingdom unfolds on Thursday July 3. Everyone is invited to wear your party costumes and enjoy the party music, the fairy costume parade, the Pop Princess Kylie Show, plus free showbags and giveaways. This is a great FREE holiday event for children between 3 and 8 years old.
Loads of fun especially geared to the younger kids, the Kids Dance Day Out is a come-and-try activity that will have children dancing, singing and performing before they know it! On Friday July 4, Kids Dance Day Out offers 6 to 12 year olds an opportunity to try differing dance styles. Bookings are available through GPAC – phone the Box Office on 5225 1200.
While working with industry professionals the participants will experience an introduction to the world of dance and performance through learning of the initial skills of tap, funk, hip-hop!
Another highlight of the splash!dance Festival is the Australian Choreographic Competition on Saturday July 5. Now in its fifth year, the competition is open to non-professional/senior students and semi-professional choreographers, and offers $4500 in prize money.
Last year’s Australian Choreographic Competition included international competitors for the first time, and attracted its biggest field yet with 39 entries from around Australia and New Zealand.
GPAC General Manager Jill Smith said it was pleasing to see the Australian Choreographic Competition give choreographers some well-earned recognition.
“It’s such a unique competition because the focus is on choreographers, not just dancers. The winners receive recognition for their talents and a significant boost to their careers, not to mention some decent prize money,” Ms Smith said.
Organised by Geelong Dance Network Inc. & Geelong Performing Arts Centre with support from the City of Greater Geelong, the Australian Choreographic Competition and the splash!dance Festival looks set to ignite the regional dance community in July.
