APPLICATION
NATIONAL COMPETITION
PURPOSE
The purpose of the National Competition is to encourage young people to aspire to excellence in music and to further the musical education of the recipient of the Costa National Prize of $10,000.
There are two runner-up prizes of $2,500 which includes the Alastair Scott Prize and the Douglas Weiland Prize.
The Trustees of the Geelong Advertiser Music Scholarship invite applications for the National Competition which will be conducted in conjunction with the Regional Competition. The competition is open to solo instrumental performers and finalists will be selected to perform at the Finals Concert in Costa Hall, Deakin University, Waterfront Campus, on the evening of Saturday, August 9th 2008.
This prestigious concert will also feature the finalists from the John Brockman Regional Competition.
CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
You must read and understand these Conditions of Entry before you complete and send in your entry form for the Geelong Advertiser Music Competition.
1. To enter the Costa National Competition you must be:
a. aged between 16 and 25 years of age by April 25th 2008; and
b. an Australian citizen, either by birth or by naturalisation, or a permanent resident of Australia that is domiciled in Australia or has lived in Australia for not less than 12 months immediately preceding this application. You may be asked for proof of age, citizenship or residency at any stage of the competition.
2. All applications must be accompanied by a good quality CD recording of the applicant performing a program including a work from the Baroque or classical period and a Romantic or Modern work
3. All recordings should be made with suitable and stylistically appropriate accompaniment. Recordings with orchestral accompaniment will not be accepted.
4. Recordings must be made within six months prior to entry. The date and place of making the recording must be included on the recording.
5. Recordings should run for a maximum of 30 minutes. Recordings and their containers must be named and identifiable. If you require your CD to be returned please include a stamped, self addressed suitable envelope at the time of application.
6. Paperwork accompanying applications will not be returned. Please send copies, not originals of supporting documents.
7. Finalists will be notified immediately on completion of preliminary judging and will be required to perform in public before the adjudicator and an audience at Costa Hall, Deakin University Waterfront Campus on the evening of Saturday, August 9th 2008, when the National Competition winner will be selected. (Please do not apply if you cannot be present on that day).
8. If you have previously won the Costa National Competition or the Geelong Advertiser Music Competition, you may not apply.
9. Results of the selection process will be notified by mail. This will occur by May 30th 2008 except in unusual circumstances.
10. If you are selected as a finalist in the competition you must within two weeks of notification of selection provide a recent black and white portrait photograph of yourself, a biography and program notes of the performance piece of not more than 150 words, both of which should be suitable for use in printed programs for the Geelong Advertiser Music Competition. The biography may be edited for publication purposes at the discretion of the Trustees.
11. The Trustees reserve the right not to award the Costa National Prize or runner-up prizes if, in the opinion of the adjudicator of the Competition, the standard of performance does not warrant such an award.
12. At all stages of the awards and the Competition the decision of the adjudicator and the Trustees is final.
13. $750 assistance towards travel costs of interstate applicants will be considered at the time finalists are selected. This assistance will only be considered upon presentation of an associated expense summary prior to the expenses being incurred. At this time the Trustees will make a decision concerning the assistance and payment will only be made upon presentation of receipts satisfactory to the Trustees.
14. Finalists must provide their own accompanist for performance and rehearsal.
15. If selected, finalists consent to a DVD biography presentation being compiled for use at the finals concert and on Competition website.
16. Any selected finalist who performs longer than the required 20 minutes may be penalised during the adjudication process at the discretion of the adjudicator or the Trustees.
17. If selected as the winner of the Competition the applicant agrees, if requested, to perform without fee at a concert in Geelong at a place and time to be agreed.
18. In consideration of the Trustees agreeing to accept your application you agree to assign to the Trustees all rights, including copyright, in
- any CD or other recorded work or other material submitted with this application; and
- if selected as a finalist, any performance undertaken in the course of the Competition and if selected as the winner the performance referred to in clause 17.
You acknowledge being the owner of the rights to be assigned under this clause and warrant that to your knowledge no licence or interest in the rights assigned have been granted.
19. “Conditions of Entry” means the conditions of entry in this application and includes the repertoire regulations for finalists and the other terms and conditions on which the Competition is held.
20. “Trustees” means and includes the Trustees for the time being of the Competition or any person authorised by the Trustees to undertake, supervise or administer the Competition, and where the context requires, includes the adjudicator.
21. The Trustees may modify or amend the Conditions of Entry from time to time as they consider necessary in their sole discretion.
REPERTOIRE REGULATIONS IF SELECTED AS FINALIST
Please read these regulations carefully
The performance program selected by the applicant must not exceed 20 minutes in length and will be - a work from the Baroque or classical period and/or
- a Romantic or Modern work
The selection of music for the Finals concert can be different from that performed on the CD submitted for preliminary judging. The finalist must remember when selecting the performance piece that the criteria for adjudication are the finalist’s overall demonstrated talent, skill and rapport with the audience. The Finals program selection will be presented in two parts with the combined appearances not to exceed 20 mins. The timing breakdown and selection of music chosen by the finalist must be submitted to the Trustees for approval.
CLOSING DATE
Closing date for the receipt of applications is April 25th 2008. Late applications will not be accepted.
Previous winners are not eligible. Note: Please do not apply if you are unable to perform in Geelong on 9th August 2008.

Applications will not be accepted if they are postmarked later than 25th April 2008. Faxed applications will not be accepted. Late applications will not be accepted. Applicants cannot apply for an extension to the closing date. Previous winners are not eligible.

JOHN BROCKMAN REGIONAL COMPETITION
PURPOSE
The purpose of the John Brockman Regional Competition is to encourage young people to aspire to excellence in music and to further the musical education of the recipient of the Harwood Andrews Regional Prize of $3,000.
The three remaining runner-up finalists will each receive a $1,000 Patrons Prize.
The Trustees of the Geelong Advertiser Music Scholarship invite applications for the John Brockman Regional Competition which will be conducted in conjunction with the National Competition. This prize is available to young classical musicians who are resident or have been educated for a minimum of two years in the Geelong region. Finalists will be selected to perform at the Finals Concert in Costa Hall, Deakin University, Waterfront Campus, on the evening of Saturday, August 9th 2008.
This prestigious concert will also feature the finalists from the National Competition.
RULES
1. An award or awards shall be made by the Trustees to such applicants as the Judge appointed by the Trustees decides.
2. The Judge shall be a person of national musical repute.
3. The Judge may refrain from recommending an award in any year.
4. Previous winners of the Regional Competition are ineligible to enter.
SELECTION PROCESS
First Round Auditions - Sunday May 18th at Geelong College
Semi Final Recital – Saturday June 14th at St Joseph – Costa Auditorium – Free public concert
Finals Concert – held in conjunction with the National Finals on Saturday August 9th 2008
CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
1. The Geelong Advertiser Music Regional Competition is open to solo instrumental performers aged between 14 and 20 years on April 25th, 2008.
2. Those persons who within the period of five years immediately preceding their application to enter the competition resided in the municipalities of the City of Greater Geelong, Surfcoast Shire, Golden Plains Shire, Borough of Queenscliff, or the Colac Otway Shire for not less than two years.
3. Applicants will play for a panel of adjudicators on Sunday 18th May at Geelong College. Applicants will present a program of their own choice with a minimum of six and a maximum of ten minutes. Recommended standard would be from approximately Grade 7 AMEB or equivalent.
4. Audition times will be notified after the closing date for applications on April 25th 2008.
5. A maximum of 12 performers will be selected to go on to a public Semi Final recital on Saturday June 14th 2008 at 8:00pm at Costa Auditorium, St Joseph’s College.
6. Four finalists will be selected to play at the Finals Concert in Costa Hall, Deakin University, Waterfront Campus, on the evening of Saturday, August 9th, 2008.
7. Entrants may enter both the Regional and the National Competition, but if selected as a finalist in both competitions, they must choose whether to appear in EITHER the National OR the Regional Competition, not both.
8. Finalists must be prepared to supply a recent photograph and a 100 word biography of themselves suitable for publicity purposes to assist in promoting the Competition.
9. If selected, finalists consent to a DVD biography presentation being compiled for use at the finals concert and on Geelong Advertiser Music Competition website.
10. If selected as the winner of the Competition the applicant understands that they may be asked to perform without fee at a concert in Geelong at a place and time to be agreed.
11.
