Alcoa Theatre Season

Alcoa Theatre Season 2010 heralds another year of great entertainment packed with toe-tapping music, hilarious comedy and sizzling performances.

The spotlight will shine on an endless parade of top-shelf performers including veteran actors/comics Max Gillies and Garry McDonald, chanteuses Christine Anu and Casey Donovan, and even Australia's greatest magician James Galea - in a stylish, astonishing and celebratory collection of shows.

The stars may bring you in, but it is the performances and the stories that will sweep you up into the stratosphere. Subscribe to Alcoa Theatre Season in 2010 and lose yourself for a while in tales of triumph, trickery, discovery, dreaming, longing, belonging, friendship and family. Our season opens with the return of the irreverent and irrepressible Max Gillies in the political satire Godzone. (Just when Kevin and Julia thought it was safe to go back in the water…)

Then there's the 'feelgrrreat' true story of girl group The Sapphires, four hot soul sisters from regional Victoria sent to entertain the troops in Vietnam.

And just when you think you've seen it all...Dead Poets Society meets Shakespeare as a classic tragedy returns with a testosterone-fueled twist in Shakespeare's R&J.

You'll learn the fine art of trickery (and how to cheat properly at cards) in Lying Cheating Bastard, the intriguing story of infamous con-man Jimmy Garcia.

The season finishes with Bangarra Dance Theatre's powerful story of a young girl's journey between two cultures in Mathinna.

In addition to the fabulous theatre season we have planned, 2010 is a significant year in GPAC's development. A major refurbishment of the Ford Theatre will be underway early in the new year. Look forward to a brand spanking venue after Easter next year.

Oh and while we're talking about change, you'll notice our theatres have new names: Ford Theatre is now Ford Playhouse and Blakiston Theatre is the Blakiston Drama Theatre.

Of course the same friendly welcome awaits you at our Box Office, in the bar and at our cafe. So come walk the red carpet with us in 2010. This is your year to sparkle!

From all of us at GPAC,

Jill Smith
General Manager

THIS SEASON'S SHOWS
Gwen in Purgatory
Gwen is 90. She woke up this morning to discover that purgatory is sitting alone in a new house in a new subdivision on the edge of town, trying to work out if the remote in her hand operates the TV, the air-con or the fan-forced oven. But the kids are coming round and Father Ezekiel is on his way to bless the house, so the beginning of the end is looking up… Gwen in Purgatory is Tommy Murphy's brilliant existential comedy about an African missionary in the wilderness of Australian suburbia. more >>
Mathinna
Inspired by a young girl's journey between two cultures, Mathinna traces the history of a young Aboriginal girl removed from her traditional life, adopted into Western Colonial society to be ultimately returned to the fragments of her original heritage. Mathinna became the archetype of the 'stolen child' and, in this brand new work, Australia's internationally renowned dance company Bangarra recreates her powerful story of vulnerability and searching in an era of confusion and intolerance. more >>
