Wretch
by Angus Cerini
A prison visit, a swamp of memory…love in all its beauty and revulsion.
Acclaimed upon it's sell out and extended premiere season, WRETCH has astonished Melbourne audiences with its lyrical beauty and barely restrained linguistic physicality.
Described by one audience member as "Bogan Shakespeare", they say the play is dead, in the case of WRETCH is has been brought back to life in a searing and compulsive form.
A mother visits her son at the prison where he is serving time for crimes of violence. She struggles to tell him of the cancer which has returned to fill her body, giving her only a short time to live. He in turn has his own secret which burns on his mind…he has killed another inmate. Over the course of this visit nothing will ever stay the same and their love is tested.
"It is Cerini's language that gives this play its real strength. Language becomes inchoate, almost mythic, as it is stripped back to instinctive and subliminal expression."
