Victorian Opera and GPAC:ED presents

YOUTH OPERA - Brundibar

TICKETS ON SALE NOW!

The search is on to find Geelong's opera stars of the future! The Victorian Opera in conjunction with GPAC is organising the region's first ever youth opera experience, which will culminate in a performance of the children's opera Brundibár by Jewish/Czech composer Hans Krasa.

Participants will gain a rare opportunity to work with the musical director of Victorian Opera, Richard Gill, prior to his retirement from the company in 2012.

The opera will be performed with an orchestra featuring students from Christian College, who will be mentored by professional musicians.

Brundibár was first performed in a Jewish orphanage in Prague and then reconstructed in the concentration camp Theresienstadt. Richard Gill describes the opera as an "extraordinary piece".

"This opera is a vehicle for bringing children into the company to make an opera, to learn how an opera goes together, to understand the function of a director, the function of the music, the function of the text etc. Brundibár is a perfect opera for that particular purpose, because it's a short piece, 30 minutes long."
