Geelong Repertory Theatre Company presents
The Shoehorn Sonata
by John Misto; directed by Geoff Gaskill
“Sonata: an instrumental composition usually of three or four movements designed chiefly for its solo instrument.” - Chambers 20th century dictionary
The Shoehorn Sonata is a play inspired by actual events during world War II. It is a story of love, sacrifice, war, memory -- and the exquisite demands of friendship. It centres around two characters - Bridie, and Sheila who met in 1942 after the Japanese torpedo the ship on which they were supposed to escape from Singapore. Although their friendship could survive the three and a half years of captivity it did not, it seems, survive the peace.
Fifty years on they meet again when they are brought together at a reunion for the making of documentary about their experiences during the war. But down the years they have never kept in touch and now they are weary of each other and of renewing their friendship. On the surface all seems to be well but Bridie and Sheila carry baggage that they have never on packed. Till now.
John Misto dedicated his play to “the women who were there ... “It is a poignant reminder that Australian Army nurses were prisoners of war as well as soldiers, sailors and airmen. All suffered. Many continue to suffer long after the last angry shot was fired.”
