Sir Andrew Davis, a renowned interpreter of British music, opens this
all-British program with Tippett's exhilarating concerto, one of the
supreme works for strings. The Musicologist Wilfred Mellers once said of
Vaughan-Williams: 'By no other composer is the interdependence of man
and Nature more movingly expressed,’ and The Lark Ascending – here with
MSO Concertmaster Wilma Smith as soloist – virtually defines this aspect
of his musical personality. Sir Andrew is then joined by Australia's
iconic soprano, Yvonne Kenny, as they recite Edith Sitwell's poetry to
the witty, tuneful musical settings the young William Walton created for
them in Façade.
Pre-Concert Conversation: Sir Andrew Davis will be interviewed by Huw Humphreys at 7pm.
