Critical Stages / Finucane & Smith presents

The Flood

by Jackie Smith

The sheep farm is dilapidated. The farm house, dark and squalid by the river, shelters an old mad lady and her isolated hard-drinking daughter. Memories are seeping through the floorboards. As the sun sets, the flood waters rise. Then the screen door bangs open in the rain and wind: Catherine has returned after twenty years. The past is here.

Fuelled by alcohol and uncertain memories of a long-dead father, the estranged sisters are trapped in mesmerising friction by their mother and a past no-one wants to remember.

This electrifying and disturbing work bristles with dark humour and edge-of-the-seat performances. The Flood is startlingly authentic writing, plunging audiences into a web of family intrigue set against a haunting Australian landscape.
